Mobile Missile Message

Martin, Harding & Mazzotti law firm along with the Choices 301 organization brought their message to life by having GetMobile create a 3D display with the Missile that Ed Frank designed to depict what a drunk driver on the road can become–a “Misguided Missile”  The “Mobile Missile” appeared throughout the Capital Region for 3 days prior to the Super Bowl with a great program for a free cab ride home offered by the law firm Martin, Harding and Mazzotti.  We know we made an impact as one woman who we interacted with during the campaign told us she lost a relative to a drunk driver on a Super Bowl Sunday in the past.  She agreed to take a poster and hang it at her workplace depicting the Choices 301 image of Cab, Cop or Coffin.

Ed Frank, Sr. is the founder of Choices 301 as well as the creator of Cab, Cop or Coffin and the missile.  He works very hard at getting the word out to the public and does so in honor of his son Ed Jr. who had a hobby as a stock car racer with the car number 301.  While Ed Jr. was alive he made every effort to teach young people about driving safely.  Please visit the Choices 301 website for more information on Ed’s story and sponsorship opportunities.  We were honored to work with such a wonderful individual who is trying to make a difference and hopefully save lives.

A press conference was also held to kick off the campaign at the Verdoy Fire Dept and Lt. Crouch of the Stop DWI program for Albany County spoke about the dangers of driving drunk and the programs in place to get help.

GetMobile’s mission statement is to provide creative and interactive advertising while being a resource to and partner with the communities in which we live and serve.

I’ve inserted a few examples of what IS NOT Mobile Advertising.  With apologies to the advertisers for singling them out, we felt it was our duty as more and more of these unprofessional examples of “creative signage” keep popping up all over the landscape.  We also feel this is a very poor representation of what people might consider to be mobile advertising as our industry considers what we do to be a very professional and highly targeted, technical advertising business.

We thought it would be a good idea to enlighten advertisers, who think they have “beaten the system” by buying or renting some beat up trucks at auction, having them wrapped and parking them in the parking lots where their businesses are located.  First things first.  Take a look at the examples.  You will see one former U-Haul truck (obviously bought at an auction) parked in a parking lot near the owner’s business.  You will see a second example of a truck that is a lettered business vehicle.  Great and hooray for that business owner who gets the fact that branding is an important part of his/her business.  Now here is where the “NOT MOBILE” comes in.

In the first example the truck literally sits there rusting away parked in the plaza where the business already exists.  This is merely a stationary sign that happens to be on a truck, and just like most outdoor static advertising it becomes part of the background scenery once it has been seen one or more times at the same location day in and day out.  This truck may from time to time deliver something, but I don’t ever recall receiving a Subway delivery in a former U-Haul truck.  It just does not speak professionally for this business in our opinion.

The second example is a lettered business vehicle.    This vehicle may make deliveries to their “existing and sold customers”.   However, they are going to and from their location to a customer’s home (usually during the day when most other home owners are working).  It is technically mobile to and from the jobs, but it is not targeting new customers by hanging out around it’s competitors locations, and I’m sure the business owner would not appreciate his/her employee taking breaks at busy shopping areas when they are supposed to be delivering furniture.

We have heard from other businesses located in these plazas as well as plaza owners that don’t appreciate the eye sore the trucks parked at the ends of parking lots are creating.  We can only imagine that it will be a matter of time before municipalities pass laws prohibiting the parking of these unsightly vehicles for advertising purposes.  A professionally lettered business vehicle is one thing, but a beat up truck from auction is really pushing the envelope.  If they want to be in the mobile advertising business then we suggest they plunk down the $100k investment, licensing, training, marketing materials etc. and open a legitimate, professional mobile advertising business.

Please don’t lower the bar to an industry that prides itself on professional, targeted, and clean execution of advertising campaigns.  Realize we take no issue with legitimate lettered business vehicles parked at a business-this makes sense!  But please let the professionals do what they do best!

The above two pictures were a one day campaign for a new holistic veterinary business called Earth Angels.  We carefully executed the 3 sided exclusive campaign to be seen at a high brow dog show.  We were able to secure a spot directly at entry to the event as well as in and around the location to draw more attention to the event and advertiser.   This is what targeted, professional advertising looks like.  Our driver (in this case the owner of GetMobile) acted as an ambassador handing out business cards to interested attendees.  Now we hope you have a clearer picture of what IS MOBILE advertising.  It is interactive, targeted, unexpected, and MOBILE!

You have seen them, talking on the phone while driving and looking down while holding the phone in one hand and trying to write with the other–oh wait a minute-we only have 2 HANDS!

Statistics are alarming on the number of traffic incidents caused by cell phone use while driving, especially due to the fact that many cell phone users are of the younger inexperienced driving group.

DOT Secretary Ray LaHood announced new research findings by NHTSA that show nearly 6,000 people died in 2008 in crashes involving a distracted or inattentive driver, and more than half a million were injured. On any given day in 2008, more than 800,000 vehicles were driven by someone using a hand-held cell phone. “Every single time someone takes their eyes or their focus off the road – even for just a few seconds – they put their lives and the lives of others in danger,” said Secretary LaHood Sept. 30 in Washington, D.C. “Distracted driving is unsafe, irresponsible and in a split second, its consequences can be devastating.”–excerpted from the NHTSA website.

(Albany, NY) New York State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky today passed legislation that would require police to note whether drivers involved in a motor vehicle accident were using a cell phone at the time of the crash.
New York State only permits hands free cell phones while driving but numerous studies show that the devices can distract drivers, which can be a factor in vehicle accidents. Records show that sending text messages while driving was a factor in a 2007 crash that killed five girls from the Rochester area when their SUV collided head-on with a tractor-trailer. A 2007 study by the San Diego State University School of Public Health showed that using a cell phone while driving quadruples the risk of a collision and multiplies the risk of a fatality nine-fold.

During this busy holiday season when we are already distracted about what to buy Aunt Erma and Uncle Charlie and where to find the Zhu Zhu pets that are out of stock everywhere (sorry a little personal rant), we should not add to the distraction by using our cell phones while driving.  Perhaps the best gift of all this holiday season would be a hands free device for all of your loved ones who must talk and drive.  Of course that doesn’t stop the crazy people who text and drive.

All indications from the retailer advertisers we have spoken to seem to point to a better holiday season than last year and with the stock markets uptick it might seem so.

That being said we wanted to share some information from the Arbitron 2009 In Car Study which updated the 2003 study, of significance was the increase in time spent in a car during an average week-it increased 31% from 2003. Those additional car hours are music to our ears (though commuters might not like it).

Other interesting statistics are the over 50% of people who received directional information from outdoor advertising and 24% said they immediately visited a business due to an outdoor message. And if you think radio is the way to go for your advertising message take a look at this statistic-over 40% learned about or were reminded to listen to a radio station via outdoor advertising. The difference with mobile outdoor from static outdoor is very simple– Reach & Frequency. We have on average 85% reach and 20x frequency based on our mobile high traffic exposure plans. The other interesting fact about mobile outdoor is that we are able to cater to our advertiser’s needs via demographic location. Advertiser’s can provide us with a zip code list and we can design exclusive campaigns just for them.  More than half of people 18 and older who viewed outdoor advertising learned about an event they were interested in attending–ironically GetMobile has their advertising vehicle at many large events and advertises future events at those venues as well.  If the statistics above don’t have you seeking out GetMobile to be your choice for outdoor mobile advertising then we don’t know what will.  Perhaps some more photos of our successful campaigns below.
